The Matchstick Monastery

The Rila Monastery, Bulgaria, in a matchstick model (above) and as it really looks (below). The monastery was founded in the 9th century by monks who came to study with a cave-dwelling hermit, St. Ivan of Rila. It was moved to its current site in the 14th century and the oldest buildings date to that period, including that charming little church.
